Welcome to Understanding Literature! 

I created this website with students in mind. You will understand literature. This website contains reading guides, which will help you become a better close reader and critical thinker. These reading guides are applicable to all literature. Guides such as "5 Ways to Analyze a Character" will help you understand all points of the plot such as the conflict, the climax, and the resolution.

In school, my emphasis was Renaissance Literature and Shakespeare, so I post summaries of Shakespeare plays in order to help students better understand his works. Many students I meet either hate Shakespeare because they think it is boring, or are intimidated by Shakespeare because of the language. My goal is to help students read through his plays with ease and, hopefully, see they are not boring. Even if it turns out you still don't care for his plays, you will at least be able to understand them and complete class assignments related to them.

Additionally, I've provided a brief overview of English monarchs during the Renaissance is available on a separate tab. Often it is important to understand the history, politics, and religion of the time period to understand the literature written during the Renaissance.

My time as an English tutor and a writing tutor has also enlightened me to the different difficulties students face when expressing themselves through the written word. Essays are something students severely dislike. I've created some writing guides to assist you in getting started when writing those essays. In time and with practice, you will become a more eloquent writer!
